WebbI try to just pack the first snowfall so that it becomes an ice base. Usually the first snow is damp enough to pack well. We have a long gravel drive and have to push some snow to a couple locations on the lawn to reduce plowing time. Once it's froze up and double ring chains on the tractor, it's pretty easy to plow and maintain. Using shoes are OK if you want to leave a 1/4 or so of snow. I plow to the hard surface on concrete or asphalt, that is why I back blade on gravel till it becomes frozen and then just plow normal.
